Our first night, we saw a local show with traditional island dancing (yes boys, those coconuts are real).
RAR_01
Just the girls, wooing the boys...
RAR_02
Just outside our window at Aremongo... an above-ground grave. We saw a lot of these in Rarotonga, but it wasn't the kind of thing you cared to see outside your bedroom window.
RAR_03
Have you ever heard of a mouse trap where there weren't mice? Neither have we. Ken happened to spot the fellow this trap was intended for at Aremongo. Unfortunately, the mouse was on the kitchen counter.

This illustrates the type of communal kitchens we're living in. On the right, each room is assigned a cabinet, and basic kitchen utensils are provided. If you're lucky, you might come across something edible in the shared bin (usually spices, rice or cooking oil).
RAR_05
Our dryer. It worked great until it started raining (go figure).
RAR_06
Aremongo Guesthouse, our first hostel in Rarotonga. Notice the bin of empty beer bottles in the bottom corner. It was probably filled every other day!
RAR_07
One of the beautiful children in Rarotonga.
RAR_08
Our first live rugby match. Notice the palm trees in the background. The setting couldn't be more stunning!
RAR_09
Someone's not too happy she didn't get any candy (but we thought she was cute anyway).
RAR_10
Our new friends and rugby guides, Nicola and Chris, who are also on a one-year adventure. They are from Bristol, England.
RAR_11
Welcome to the Fosters Cup. We can't escape it... stadium advertising even in the islands! Notice the names of the teams, the Dogs and the Eels. Eels for a team mascot?!
RAR_12
We were treated to a baseball-like brawl as two players let their tempers get the best of them and the benches cleared.
RAR_13
Even spectators on the sidelines got into it.
RAR_14
The band at the rugby match. Anytime there was a score, they played a little island music (heavy on the drum beats).
RAR_15
The winners of the Rarotonga Fosters Cup for 2001!
